Not doing THAT

Do you ever notice yourself doing that thing you said you’d never do?

Why is it that stronger we vow not to do something, we do it?

I am NOT drinking more than 2 beers tonight! 4 beers later…

I am NOT skipping the gym today! Oops too late to go now….

No sugar for the rest of the week! 3 cookies and the emergency candy bar in your glove box later…

Is it a matter of changing our thoughts and our words? What if we said, I am only doing what is good for me? What if we focused on the good and not the bad?

What if we took good and bad out of the equation? What if we were all ourselves? No good, no bad, no right or wrong…

When working with others, the hardest thing it is for me to hear is someone saying they know they should be doing this or that. I say, “Fuck that”. The only thing you should be doing is what works for you. And who knows what works for you? YOU, damn it!

Why did I buy a $30 pleather bound notebook? Because I was supposed to. Supposed to put my comedy thoughts in it so they aren’t lost.

Why am I sitting at my computer typing away and not using my notebook? Because a notebook wasn’t the solution. Because not having a notebook wasn’t the problem. So many loving, well intentioned, peopled gave a solution without knowing the real problem. Was buying the notebook a mistake? Nope, because there are no mistakes, no bad decisions, no right or wrong…

Perfection vs. Imperfection

I had an epiphany this morning.

A friend said, “my perfectly imperfect….”. I immediately went to my view of there is no such thing as perfection. Perfection defined is “a quality, trait, or feature of the highest degree of excellence”. “Perfection” and “excellence” are really moving targets, constantly changing due to circumstances at play. This makes our perfect goals unattainable. If there isn’t a such thing as perfection, then does imperfection exist?

As a kid, I often heard “if you’re going to something, do it right.” As an adult, I learned that sometimes the best that can be done is half or ¾ of the way. Accept that with enthusiasm! Sometimes our “best” isn’t perfect but at least it is moving us towards the direction we want.

If the pursuit of perfection is holding you back (and it is!), let it go. If the fear of imperfection is holding you back (and it is!), let it go. Perfection and imperfection are just labels that we place on our environment, our tasks, and ourselves. Let go of these labels and release yourself from the pressure of unrealistic or unattainable goals.

How I Became a Professional Organizer

I was hired as a full-time assistant for a young lady who worked out of her home.

I got this, just tell me what you need done and it will be done.

There were piles of paper throughout her small office.

(Yes, I am keeping any overly (or not overly) dramatic descriptive words out of this story. This is her story and out of respect for anyone in her situation, my current clients and my future clients, drama is not needed. We feel our pain through the story.)

There was no place for her write reports, do research, or just work. There was no place for her to rest her eye, or her coffee cup.

She needed space – to be, to think, to work.

So, I will clear her space. I got this!

I will file her papers in the file cabinet. Oh wait, they are already full. Well, let’s see what needs to be kept….

It all “needs to be kept”.

I felt frustrated. I wanted to give her space, to give her time, to give her peace. But it wasn’t my place. My “I got this” was slipping away.

So, I focused on doing my job of being her assistant. I gathered the necessary paperwork and headed to her living room so she could work in her office.

The living room wasn’t conducive to working, either.  I had a cell phone, a laptop, one couch cushion and the corner of the coffee table. Yet,  I still couldn’t accomplish my tasks. The clutter in that room was just as distracting as her office.

So, I considered moving to the kitchen, determined to get my work done.

The kitchen wasn’t an option. There was no place I wanted to put stuff, let alone my lunch. I didn’t start organzing; it wasn’t my place. But I couldn’t help but suggest some changes that I knew would help her to be more productive in both her personal and business life.

She wasn’t open to change. She didn’t see how her environment was having a negative effect on her work, her home and her child.

My heart broke for her and her child. I wanted so badly to help and I knew I could make a huge difference.

I was literally sitting on her couch, looking around at the clutter and realized that there are so many people who could have easier lives if they could clear the clutter and who do want change. And I knew deep down inside that this is my calling.

That day, I reached out to a professional organizer and made arrangements to study under her.  I took what I learned, modified it to fit who I am and my natural abilities and Bright Organizing Solutions was born.

I got this!

Adapting to the Lazy Life

Do you love those lazy days of summer, of fall, of winter. I mean, those lazy days any time of the year!

How about those lazy times, reading a book for the sheer pleasure, watching a movie snuggled on the couch, or sitting on the porch with a hot cup of coffee!

“Lazy” can be your goal. Lazy is what happens when all the important stuff is handled and, maybe, some non important stuff. Lazy is what happens when your business, home and life is properly managed.

As you explore a lazy life style and apply a lazy life style, magic can happen. You can become more peaceful. You can move through your day with a lighter feeling. Let go of watching the clock but don’t let go of completing tasks. Let go of the stress of the tasks. Just let them happen and unfold. Trust yourself.

Lazy can be a new attitude. Let things flow. Don’t stress trying to get the closest parking spot, take the easy one (the middle one of three open spaces in the back of the lot). Don’t speed down the 90 to get to your next destination which had no time constraints (so, of course, spotting the trooper on the side of road won’t affect your speed at all!)

Eat lazily. Don’t rush it, enjoy it. And then, lazily do the dishes and clean up.

My Love for the “Lazy”

Why “Lazy”? Some might say “zen”, “in the flow”, or “being present”. Lazy is what resonates with me at this moment. I am not spending precious energy to come up with a more effective or better connotation. Yep, I am being lazy!

“Lazy” is my goal. Lazy is what happens when all the important stuff is handled and, maybe, some non important stuff. Lazy is what happens when my business, home and life is properly managed.

As I explored a lazy life style and applied it, magic happened. I became more peaceful. I moved through my day with a lighter feeling. I let go of watching the clock but I didn’t let go of completing tasks. I let go of the stress of the tasks. I just let them happen and unfold. I trusted in myself.

I, accidentally, lazily got up this morning and walked the dog (a.k.a. Brix, Brixy or Brixy-Poo) I was so lazy about this task that I, accidentally again, turned the walk into a jog.

How I went from feeling unsettled in my house to establishing a home

I was running nonstop. living on the run. running to sporting events. eating on the run. running to work. running while spending quality time with my son.

The house was chaotic because there was no intention, attention to detail. Chores were done quickly, without focus. I hated sorting laundry, so clean laundry never made it out of the hamper. Had to iron every morning.  The kitchen was in the front of the house, so a knock at the door threw me into a panic about the state of the dishes and countertops.

Shoved papers and mail out of sight. Built up. Lost important papers in the shuffle. Late bills. And fees that went with them.

Wasn’t living intentionally. Nothing was ever done but couldn’t give myself permission to not complete a task. Beating myself up. I should be a better wife, mom, bill-payer, housemaker.

Work was my escape. Believe it or not, it was a place where everthing was where it should be, I could slow down, take a lunch hour, and flow thorugh my day effectively.

Oh to be able to do that at my house!

Years later, I had moved to a new state. Without a social life and no extra curricular activities to run to, I had more time. And, this house was bigger than the last, so I had  more space.

Yet, everything was unsettled.

I felt Vulnerable. No connections. Culture shock.

I didn’t feel at home out and about OR in my house.

Deep desire to eliminate the chaos. But, not sure how, didn’t know where to start, resisted doing it,

I had enough of running, beating myself up, not being able to get things done amidst the chaos.

I wanted to eliminate the chaos, get organized and stay organizde. But what I REALLY wanted was to  feel settled and peaceful.

I realized that when things are in their place, I feel more grounded. So I gave it a try. I researched, studied with  a professional organizer, learned the craft and tackled my house. And it was easier than I ever thought it could be.

I stopped judging myself, I took a good look at what I had, I let go of the extraneous and I created systems to keep the new found sense of peace in my home.

As a result, I had more quality time with my family. Life, work, balance flowed.

For the last dozen years I’ve had the priveledge to “play” with wonderful clients and help them go from overwhelmed and unsettled to grounded, peaceful and happy, all through the magic of organizing!
